Harley’s® Reflex Defensive Rider System (RDRS) is a collection of highly advanced electrical chassis controls, enhancing riders confidence during unexpected situations or poor road conditions. This will be a brief overview of the key technologies in the advanced system, and how they intend on keeping you safer on the roads.
ANTILOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) & CORNERING ENHANCED ABS (C-ABS)
ABS stands for Antilock Brake System, and helps riders maintain control of their vehicle when braking in a straight-line during an unexpected situation. The idea is that when riders are faced to stop urgently, they tend to grip the brakes firmly, which without ABS, would lock up the rear or front tyre, causing them to lay down the bike. The ABS system will deter this from happening, allowing the bike to come to a safe stop without locking any of the wheels. What’s more impressive is that Harley® has taken this technology to the next level, applying this technology in corners. Based on the lean angle of the bike, the Cornering Enhanced ABS optimizes brake pressure to safely adjust for the best possible braking performance given the situation. This will help riders remain on course with the apex of the curve and won’t interrupt the traction of the bike.
ELECTRONIC LINKED BRAKING (ELB) & CORNERING ENHANCED TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM (C-TCS)
Electronic Linked Braking (ELB), is exactly how it sounds. It applies braking to both wheels when riders use either the hand or foot brake control. The outcome of this is a greater braking experience and safer control over the vehicle. Cornering Enhanced Electronic Linked Braking (C-ELB) takes into account the motorcycle lean angle or Trike lateral acceleration. This technology helps improve the ability of the motorcycle to maintain the indented path by altering the brake pressure between the front and rear.
To help keep the rear wheel from spinning out, Traction control is present, and is designed to monitor the bike's traction on the road, especially in wet weather. A common loss of traction is in corners, so the Cornering Enhanced Traction Control System (C-TCS) is designed to assess wheel rotation, under acceleration.
DRAG-TORQUE SLIP CONTROL SYSTEM (DSCS)
Have you ever had your rear wheel slip out briefly when downshifting or decelerating rapidly? Well I sure have, and the Drag-Torque Slip Control (DSCS) is designed to reduce this from happening. When DSCS detects excessive rear wheel slip under deceleration, it will adjust engine torque delivery to better match rear-wheel speed, to road speed.
VEHICLE HOLD CONTROL (VHC)
When activated by the rider, the Vehicle Hold Control (VHC) applies and holds brake pressure, so that the motorcycle doesn’t roll backwards. The primary function of VHC is to prevent the motorcycle from rolling when it is stopped – for example at a stop sign on a hill, in stop-and-go traffic on a slope. VHC is designed to make it easier to ride away with confidence by minimizing the number of coordinated controls needed to pull away smoothly.
TYRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM (TPMS)
Tyre pressure is crucial, as it will affect your riding performance and comfort on the roads. The TPMS alerts riders of low tire air pressure via notification on the Boom!™ Box GTS screen (or on the odometer on Road King® models) and displays an indicator to alert the rider when tyre pressure is low.
The Reflex™ Defensive Rider Systems (RDRS) is a new collection of modern and advanced technologies, designed to match motorcycling performance with rider safety. RDRS features are standard on 2021 Ultra Limited, Street Glide® Special, Road King® Special, Freewheeler®, Tri Glide™ Ultra, CVO™ Limited, CVO™ Street Glide®, CVO™ Road Glide® and CVO™ Tri Glide™.
